Etsy's fee structure can be confusing. Many new sellers are shocked when they see how much Etsy takes from each sale. Let's break down every single fee so you know exactly what to expect.
1. Listing Fee ā $0.20 per item
Every time you list or relist an item, Etsy charges $0.20. This fee applies whether the item sells or not. Listings expire after 4 months and auto-renew by default.
For multi-quantity listings, you pay $0.20 for each unit sold (not just the initial listing).
2. Transaction Fee ā 6.5%
This is Etsy's main revenue source. They take 6.5% of the total sale price including shipping. If you sell an item for $35 with $5 shipping, the transaction fee is:
($35 + $5) Ć 6.5% = $2.60
3. Payment Processing Fee ā 3% + $0.25
When a buyer pays through Etsy Payments (which is required in most countries), you pay 3% + $0.25 per transaction. This covers credit card processing costs.
4. Offsite Ads Fee ā 12% or 15%
Etsy runs ads for your products on Google, Facebook, and other platforms. If a buyer clicks one of these ads and purchases within 30 days:
- Sellers making $10,000+/year: 12% fee (mandatory, cannot opt out)
- Sellers making under $10,000/year: 15% fee (can opt out)
Real Example: $35 Sale
Let's calculate the total fees on a $35 item with $5 shipping:
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee: $2.60 (6.5% of $40)
- Payment processing: $1.45 (3% of $40 + $0.25)
- Total fees: $4.25 (10.6% of sale)
If the sale came from an Offsite Ad, add another $4.80 (12%), bringing total fees to $9.05 (22.6%).
